Got us twice

they did, took

apart the homestead

turned raw swampland

into tourist attraction.

Great Granny Hickox

kept the photos

they show the family films

at the visitor’s center

where we

sweep the yard for volunteer hours

wrap the house in foil when the fires come.

Relocated twice

trucks tremble the earth underfoot

gateway to history into drive through

every year a festival stop.

I can’t believe the photos

even show it. Chesser Island

a place to visit

my past as “living history”

a heritage of visitation slogans

and cheap plushie souvenirs of alligators.

Sometimes performance is all I’m allowed access to.
